Whooho I’ve been awarded the Reisma Van den Burg Grant! This grant is named after the Frisian painter Cor Reisma (1902-1962) and is offered by his family. The biennial stipend is intended to give recent graduates from the Minerva Art Academy an opportunity to further develop their work through an (inter)national project.Continue reading Reisma Van den Burg Grant
Finally I was able to unveil New Manhattan! It will be exhibited until the 10th of February 2019 at Groninger Forum (Public Library), Oude Boteringestraat 18, 9712 GH Groningen.
Approximately 70 curious people visited the opening and I really enjoyed watching them discover New Manhattan. Had some good talks, but the time flew by. I just wished I could have spoken with everybody.Continue reading New Manhattan: The Opening
The crowdfunding campaign for New Manhattan was a succes! At the moment I’m still busy with 3D-printing the architecture of 60 webpages and finishing the interactive installation. But I’d already like to invite you for the opening of the exhibition. The opening takes place on Tuesday the 8th of January at 16:30 in Groningen.Continue reading Invitation to the opening of New Manhattan
On Sunday November 4th you can find me at the Internet Yami-Ichi in Utrecht, where I’ll enthuse visitors for my New Manhattan project and have people ‘beta-test’ the Trump Tweet Tower. At the offline internet market hosted by TivoliVredenburg you’ll find all kinds of internet inspired art and design.
At the TEC ART exhibition, during Rotterdam Art Week, you could once again explore the world of Web Spaces! I had my dual-screen interactive installation up and running, where webpages are transformed into 3D ‘buildings’ in real time. As well as 3D prints of worlds most valuable webpage’s, printed in precious metals.
Back from New York and back at work with some new inspiration (as well as body, time, rhythm fucked-up-ness).
Here are some (more) screenshots from the video piece I am currently working on (titled: “Your mouth is like the feet of the octopus she said”),
These specific renders are heavily inspired conceptually by Carlos Castaneda (not sure which book but at one point he meets the moth gate keeper and battle him fearing for his life (as he always kindof does) to gain access to another part of his dreamworld. It is also aesthetically heavily influenced by Hieronymus Bosch (“The temptation of st Anthony”).
Everything comes together eventually it seems…
Web Spaces – 3D Printed Web Pages is a project I’ve been working on during the Summer Sessions 2016 residency. There’s a nice article about it on the V2_ webpage which introduces the project like this:
Jip de Beer’s Web Spaces is an ongoing investigation into the structure of web pages. How can three dimensional beings, like you and me, explore the virtual landscape of web pages? By rendering the building blocks of a web page in three dimensions, the architecture beneath its surface is revealed.
The ‘Rap Karaoke in a Costume’ event was a big success! I hosted the event during the Open Day of the Minerva Art Academy on Saturday November 7th. Everybody was welcome to give a (lip sync) rap performance in the Green Screen Studio while simultaneously express a positive or a negative word to review a … Continue reading Rap Karaoke in a Costume @ Minerva Open Day
Ilinx is a performative environment for the general public provoking an intense bodily experience that blurs the senses of sight, sound and touch. In the environment, a group of four visitors at a time wear specially designed garments. These wearables are outfitted with various sensing and actuating devices that enable visitors to interface with the performance space. During the event, a ritualistic progression which lasts approximately twenty minutes, the natural continuum between sound and vibration, vision and feeling becomes increasingly blurred, extending and stretching the body’ boundaries beyond the realm of everyday experience.
The project is inspired by work in the area of what is called sensory substitution – the replacement of one sensory input (vision, hearing, touch, taste or smell) by another, while preserving some of the key functions of the original sense.
