Getting a grip on what I’ve read in The Ethics Of Authenticity by Charles Taylor

1. Individualism: loss of meaning, fading of moral horizons

Breaking loose of moral horizons > loss of meaning / something worth dying for / pitiable comfort / centring on the self / less concern about others.

2. Primacy of instrumental reason

No sacred structure > goal is on individuals > creatures around us lose significance in chain of being.

Demands of economic growth justifies inequality, environment issues, even disaster.

Always seeking for technological solutions (even when not called for), so we withdraw from engagement, and it narrows and flattens our lives.

3. Loss of freedom: feared consequence of individualism & instrumental reason on political life

Loss of political freedom cause:

_ institutions force societies and individuals to put weight on instrumental reason

_enclosed in our own hearts > less participation > cycle of soft despotism
