The digitalNaturality Manifesto

// Written by Hannes Andersson for the artistic research project digitalNaturality

  1. The digital naturalist acknowledges that reality is: 1) constructed through the interpretation of electrochemical signals; 2) that the signal data is simplified for pragmatic reasons, and that 3) this data is interpreted according to consensus.

  1. The digital naturalist accepts that nature is a product of culture, and hence does not support notions of dichotomies existing between the (natural) real and the (digital) virtual.

  1. The digital naturalist sees itself as a network, composed of networks and acting as a part of a bigger network.

  1. The digital naturalist identifies a naturally occurring network as defined by being: 1) sustainable, 2) mutually beneficial, and 3) under constant negotiation.

  1. The digital naturalist recognizes that nature is self-similar in scales.

  1. The digital naturalist agrees that the sharing of knowledge is imperative in order for a sustainable scaling to occur.

  1. The digital naturalist admits that the only true “natural” order of things is a tendency towards complexity and therefor that connectivity is the basis of development.

  1. The digital naturalist finds that this natural development is currently hindered by speculative self-interest.

  1. The digital naturalist concurs with the notion that “the internet” has not delivered on the promises of global connectivity and does not permit the free sharing of information.

  1. The digital naturalist does not disregard the possibility of such a connection being made in the human species.

  1. The digital naturalist judges that another world is possible if the imagining of such a world is realised.

  1. The digital naturalist believes that not performing the attempt of imagining such a world is a morally unacceptable in regard to the current state of affairs.
